Today I want to share with you another of my multi-award winning documentary films called, State of Mind.

It is the only documentary film looking at mental illness disorders and mental health ever made in Africa.

When I heard a couple of years ago that Zimbabwe had only 7 psychiatric doctors looking after 15 million people, I started researching for this documentary film.

Psychiatric doctors have left the country due to the economic hardships caused by corrupt rule and Government incompetence.

I spent a year and half filming at Harare Hospital’s (Sally Mugabe) psychiatric unit, and also at Parirenyatwa’s Annexe psychiatric unit.

The central character in this documentary film is Dr Dixon Chibanda @DixonChibanda who is the brain child of the now globally acclaimed, Friendship Bench @friendshipbench in Zimbabwe.

The Friendship Bench has been featured in many African countries, Europe, America and was even at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
It has also been showcased by the Prince of Wales, Prince William of Britain.

Dr Chibanda is also a professor of psychiatry at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where he spends 2 weeks every month.

The documentary film is a political metaphor of life in Zimbabwe which includes drugs, unemployment, lack of rule of law, looting of public funds, failed hospital institutions and lack of medication.

With elections around the corner, Mental health institutions will yet again carry the burden of violence and intimidation when it manifests through mental illness disorders.

Today Zimbabwe public hospitals don’t have the required medication.
Poverty manifests itself through various mental disorders that include depression, anxiety and psychosis.

The Friendship Bench has become the go to place through Talk Therapy as it seeks to assist and cover up the gaps caused by failed policies.

State of Mind was shot, produced and directed by Hopewell Chin'ono.
It has won too many Film Festival awards to mention and has been shown in many cinemas around the world.

I think the bigger issue is that black men's humour is centered on humiliating, demeaning black women. It could be hair, weight, skin tone, relationships, abuse. All of it. Black men always find humour in dragging black women. Like clockwork.
