SBA President: Drought has compounded the challenges facing small businesses, some of which have been forced to pay between $10,000 and $20,000 for a truckload of water.
Me: So it's worth it to your businesses to pay a lot more for water. You just don't want to pay it to NWC.
Regarding NWC's request for a water rate hike.
Garnett Reid, SBA pres. arguing against the increase: "NWC’s financial difficulties... the result of years of failure to address ageing infrastructure".
Correct. that is why the increase is needed to upgrade that infrastructure.
Commentator on X: "People will die because of the higher cost of water."
More ppl will die because of no water at all, and without a rate increase, there will be no money to invest in the water infrastructure without which we will continue to have shortages & water lock-offs.
5:20 this afternoon, I'll be discussing the proposed water rate increase on RJR's Beyond the Headlines with Dionne Jackson Miller, the best news interviewer in the country, who doesn't let subject get away with any glibness. 😰. Maybe I should cancel.
@JCS_876 I can't be certain that an increase will be followed by capital expenditure but I'm sure it can't happen without it. Also, capex investment, in any business, is an on-going exercise. Without that, the new capacity will just continually fall into disrepair and obsolesence.

Hmm, let's see. Maybe they can develop and start selling a line of party snacks.
An independent commission should be set up to determine the recipients of national awards, to take it out of the hands of the governing political party. For one thing, this will eliminate the automatic issuing of high level awards to big money contributors to the party.
I have a long-standing disrespect for the National Awards. It exists to reward politicians & friends, with the awarding of only exceptional persons in other fields to give it a veneer of legitimacy. Pick out the unexecptional politicians and party sycophants on this year's list.

Inflation rate has skyrockted past 8%, well above the target range 4-6%. Bottom line: this is not a change from BoJ's low-inflation commitment and does not foreshadow a period of higher inflation. The drivers are temporary (higher food prices due Melisa) and BoJ will counter.
Inflation rate over the last 12 months now up to just under 8%, way out of the target range of 4-6%. "Low, stable, and predictable inflation" under threat.
Due to the current high inflation, the BoJ has been obliged to raise its policy rate (the interest rate it pays to commercial banks). This will make it less lucrative for the banks to on-lend, reducing the supply of credit and therefore spending. Lower demand => lower inflation.

Interviewer: What's your reaction to the unfortunate downside of the sugar tax with it causing job losses?
Me: You're asking my reaction to the policy having the intended effect of reducing consumption of sugary drinks, which is what necessitates the production and job cutbacks?
I'm surprised at the presence of this word. You'd think that if the place sells beer, one could assume that it would be "cold" with the sign having to tell you. [São Paulo, Brazil]
Addressing the China / Latin America & the Caribbean Development Cooperation Symposium in São Paulo, Brazil, I spoke about the importance of not using a single template given the structural differences in the region, especially those between the Caribbean and Latin America.
