Today, I visited our father and Ijaw National Leader, Chief (Dr.) Edwin Kiagbodo Clark to felicitate the icon, who turned 97 years on Saturday, May 25, 2024.
Pa Clark, through his spokesperson and illustrious son of Bayelsa, Amb. (Dr.) Boladei Godknows Igali, warmly received my delegation traditionally to his Asokoro-Abuja residence.
Pa Clark, a rare gift of the Ijaw nation to Nigeria, has remained relevant in our country’s political life since the pre-independence era.
His contributions and commitment to our national development are exemplary, and even with the passage of time, his voice and interventions on topical issues in our country and the Niger Delta region have not waned.
We celebrate this unique leader and nationalist. We earnestly pray that God Almighty continue to bless him as we look forward to his celebration of a century and beyond.
I was joined on the visit by members of the Bayelsa caucus in the National Assembly, including Senator Konbowei Benson, House of Representatives Members- Fred Agbedi, Mitema Obordor, Oforji Oboku and Rodney Ambaiowei as well as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Irorodamie Komonibo, the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Maxwell Ebibai, and a former Reps member and friend of our state, Hon. Gabriel Onyewife.
MULTICHOICE DEFIES TRIBUNAL ORDER, INCREASES SUBSCRIPTION RATES
Two weeks ago, precisely on April 24, I made a post on the impending increase in the monthly subscription rates of DSTV/GOTV packages.
The new rates were to take effect from May 1, 2024.
Can a Nigerian company do this in South Africa or anywhere else? What gives Multichoice the audacity to defy our courts and even the National Assembly the way it had carried on? Are Nigerians encouraging this obvious impunity and monopoly?
Curiously, in obvious disregard and disobedience to the tribunal’s order, Multichoice has adjusted upwards its monthly subscription rates as can be seen from its website this morning. This is while the case is still pending, having been adjourned to May 16.
Yesterday, when the matter came up for hearing, the lawyer representing Multichoice, Moyosore Onigbanjo, said he filed an application on April 30 challenging the jurisdiction of the tribunal to make its April 29 order.
On April 29, following outcry from other Nigerians, a lawyer, Festus Onifade, filed a case before the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal sitting in Abuja, which gave an order halting the hike pending the determination of the case and it was adjourned to Tuesday, May 7.
