We're teaching children that if you don't like how someone else makes you feel, that other person is bad. No questions asked. Or if someone says something you dislike, you should stomp on them. Quickly and immediately.

This is such rubbish.

Instead, we ought to teach children to be responsible for their own emotional reactions and to regulate themselves so they can be productive members of society-- productively disagreeing, productively fighting injustices, and productively listening to a diversity of perspectives in the service of getting closer to the truth, not avoiding all discomfort like the plague.

Younger kids:
- Did you help anyone today?
- Did anything surprising happen today?

Older kids:
- Did everything go exactly as planned today?
- Who is your least favorite teacher?
