Honestly, two years on, I find myself uninterested and uninclined to commemorate October 7 with the resistance fetishizers for whom resistance is nothing more than an aesthetic; with the academics who’ve spent the last two years writing on Gaza through materialist, class-based lenses, forcing it into their pre-set frameworks; nor with the self-proclaimed activists who hold grand commemorations for Gaza’s martyrs only in ways they find comfortable, ways that often erase the Islamic essence from the entire conversation.

All I can think of is how, two years on, it’s getting harder and harder to keep moving forward. As the days pass, you try your best not to grow robotic, not to let grief calcify into numbness. And in those moments, my mind drifts to those who came before us, the nameless, faceless, voiceless believers who toiled and bled so that the banner of truth could remain raised.

For as long as I can remember, Masjid Al-Aqsa felt like a painting on a wall, a sacred image I’d see but never touch. So when I finally stood within its walls, what I felt was electric. I remembered the masses that gathered during the intifadas, the countless settler assaults on Al-Aqsa, and the youth who raised their fingers in unison, pledging to defend what Allah had sanctified.

The young men and women of Gaza, both fighters and civilians, many of them never got to see Al-Aqsa, yet you’d never know it from the way they stand firm in defense of their dignity, integrity, and sanctity. Even as the world looks on, offering only platitudes and empty gestures, they hold their ground. And I sit here embarrassed, unable to match that ferocity, and I ask myself why.

“O believers! What is the matter with you that when you are asked to march forth in the cause of Allah, you cling firmly to the earth? Do you prefer the life of this world over the Hereafter?” (Qur’an 9:38)

We are being tested not only in whether we speak, but in whether we act; in whether our Islam still means movement, sacrifice, and struggle, or whether it has become a quiet ritual detached from the pain of the Ummah. We need to keep moving forward, if not to build momentum that can carry us to other wounded parts of the Ummah, then at least for the sake of our own salvation in the Hereafter.

And even if our steps falter, Allah does not abandon the sincere. He carries those who walk toward Him, even when their strength runs thin.

We all want to be raised among the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous, but that honor is reserved for those who remain steadfast, who persevere, and who continue on despite the weight of despair, fueled by the divine promise:

“…But what is with Allah is far better and more lasting for those who believe and put their trust in their Lord.” (Qur’an 42:36)
