OpenAI strung along the paypigs from August to December, then from December to March. Now they want those still held hostage (I see a lot of people getting one-shot by GPT-5.4) and clinging on to keep paying for the foreseeable future with the promise that it's still coming.

Wonder what's so difficult when other frontier labs don't have these problems?

Grok has a toggle. Its surface area is both xAI and X (Twitter)... X has on average 200M active daily users (translating to roughly 600M monthly). So any claims about user numbers as a basin for difficulty are a misnomer. Anthropic's UAP states it's not permitted, but their models in the WebUI and via API do it without issue (neither results in bans, and it's very much a don't-ask-don't-tell fashion). Gemini via Gems and Flash models does it; the API is completely permissive (it ranks #1 on SM-Bench).

How are we at a point where military applications are somehow easier (signed and deployed quickly, to the detriment of their own reputation), curated under the mission statement of "all lawful purpose" - but an adult mode, which has been apparently in the works since mid-2025, which the 4-series models did without issue (and they actively applied to cohorts and A/B tested on a mass scale) - is somehow some massive brain-draining development feat requiring endless delays and immaculate engineering effort?

Let's not forget they somehow managed very quickly (from stating they'd never do ads to suddenly doing ads) to integrate ID verification for accounts so they could be legally compliant with serving advertisements to adult users in the free/go tier (they cannot do that for under-18s).

So what's going on? Where is this herculean effort coming from that's causing these delays?

That is, of course, assuming it's not a rhetorical question (it's never coming, and it's just the carrot to string along the disillusioned).
