Rewatching the City game. Can’t remember when a single performance exposed so much about the previous 14 or so months of bad performances.

What Carrick did was simple, logical, pragmatic and effective. For me, these things stood out:

- strong central midfield trio of complementary profiles as the team’s foundation

- correct platforming of key players (Bruno, Amad, Shaw, Mainoo, Case, Mbeumo…), maximizing their individual impact + making other parts better

- compact block with aggressive pressing in strategic moments, with the clear intent to cut Rodri off during City’s progression

- short distances between both individual players & team lines, for both IP and OOP benefits

- smart combo of short passes to retain or bait, and direct passes to expose City’s rest defense issues in their 3-1-6

And Carrick obviously secured the players’ buy-in for his plan. They seemed confident, motivated, focused and calm in pivotal moments.

Honestly, don’t think we’ve had many better post-SAF performances than this.

It was not merely “let’s sit deep, defend for our lives and counter-attack when we can”; it was smart domination and at times, even suffocation.

Fantastic performance. Sometimes, you don’t need to overcomplicate things. Sometimes, it’s fine to fix the basics and give your best players a platform to succeed.
