Dear Friends -- It us with great sadness I announced that I've been laid off by Vox Media, along with a number of my colleagues, and will no longer be contributing to Eater NY, a role I've had for over 10 years. Thanks for your support, and stay tuned for future projects.
We launch, today, with our investigation of UWM.
UWM says independent mortgage brokers "shop dozens of lenders" to find the "best deal." But the nation's biggest lender pressures those brokers to push deals its way. Hunterbrook found $39 billion in mortgages came from brokers who sent UWM more than 99% of their business.
In just the last four years, borrowers have paid UWM between an estimated hundreds of millions and billions more in closing costs than people whose brokers found them typical loans — according to Hunterbrook’s data analysis, led by computer scientists, financial reporters, and a certified fraud examiner, working with mortgage industry experts
To put it in terms Ishbia would understand: Our data indicates these extra closing costs could potentially fund a Bradley Beal contract at $50 million a year for 60 years.
“We fucking took those cocksuckers down, fuck them, and we’re gonna keep fucking sticking it to them forever.” — Mat Ishbia, CEO of @UWMlending, owner of the @Suns
@garyhe If someone said that to you what they meant was you must be out of a job now that it's easy to get appointments. That person was probably snide and wrong regardless, but for a different reason.

@nickkokonas@barb_leung I think there is a cool opportunity for restaurants to sell just a couple items made up of whatever they can get easily/cheaply. I've bought a few chirashi sets from restaurants I like and been thrilled. I don't think ppl expect sushi restaurants to have a wide variety of fish rn
