“The Iranian government is bad; therefore it’s OK to bomb civilian infrastructure even though this will severely harm the civilian population.” As students of logic know, that’s called a non sequitur. It’s also perverse to pretend that you’re helping the civilian population by means that actually harm it. And if you say “But it’s OK to bomb infrastructure when the Iranian military needs it too,” that’s a red herring fallacy. Trump is not threatening to bomb civilian infrastructure in order to stop the movement of tanks, the electrical power supply to military bases, and the like. He’s doing it in order to pressure the Iranian government to capitulate. But it is immoral to harm the civilian population as a means of putting pressure on the government (just as it would be immoral to harm a bank robber’s children as a means of trying to pressure him to surrender). What Trump is doing is simply contrary to just war conditions, period.

Rawls is overrated for many reasons: the ideal theory, the unargued for assumptions about equality and the overriding importance of justice, and esp his inability to see that moral desert undermines the difference principle. He offered a just-so story that gave left liberals the feeling that their politics were Very Serious and Rational. He wrote 600 pages of deduction from a slew of false assumptions, but it had the look of seriousness. If Rawls’ work disappeared and was forgotten, very little knowledge would be lost.

I was released from Hamas captivity in January and I am a die hard fan of Maccabi Tel Aviv.
I am shocked to my core with this outrageous decision to ban me, my family and my friends from attending an Aston Villa game in the UK.
Football is a way of bringing people together irrespective of their faith, colour or religion and this disgusting decision does the exact opposite. Shame on you.
I hope you come to your senses and reconsider.
I do wonder what exactly has become of British society, this is like putting a big sign on the outside of a stadium saying “No Jews allowed”

This hits hard. Searle was one of the greats among contemporary philosophers. His work in philosophy of mind and language had enormous influence on me when I was a grad student, and his unusually lucid style was the main influence on my own approach to philosophical writing. RIP
