"E+R=O is not just about the skill. It's also about how quickly can you engage in it? Getting a good outcome is not just about the skill. It's also, what's the speed that we can execute that skill?

We want people to take responsibility, yes? Is there a difference between taking responsibility and taking responsibility eventually?

There's a very big difference. We can execute the skill but if you take responsibility versus if you take responsibility eventually, you do not create the same outcome.

So what we want is we want to have not only the highest skill but we also want to be able to deploy that skill at the speed that the moment requires.

It's one thing to listen. It's another thing to listen after somebody has to beg you to please listen. Those are very different pieces. It's one thing to empathize. It's another thing to empathize right away in the moment.

I taught this to a Navy SEAL once, and I was teaching this speed element where sometimes if your skill is a little bit lower but you go really really fast you can produce a better result than if your skill is really high but way too late.

And he said, "Yeah! What we understand is if we enter in a room, we don't have to be as accurate with our shots. If I walk into a room with you, I don't have to be more accurate with my weapon than you are."

I said, "What do you mean?"

He goes, "Well, I can get 12 shots off before you get one shot off. So, I don't have to be as accurate."

I said, "Well, that's a terrifying example and I wish you would have chosen a different one."

But it's also a perfect example.

The point is sometimes -- a lot of times -- it's not necessarily the skill that we did it with but it was our slowness to the skill or our speed to the skill.

So, recognize there is a speed element to this as well."
