You might notice that Aug and Sept got almost to pre-pandemic levels even though payments weren’t due yet. We can’t look at transaction level data, but it looks like those were relatively fewer bulk payments right as interest resumes. The daily data shows a peak at Sept 1st.
This piece cites an estimate for annual student loan payments of… $120 billion! They took the pre-pandemic average monthly payment and multiplied that by the total number of borrowers. One problem: around half won’t be entering repayment.

Here are monthly deposits at Treasury from ED (probably around 90% are student loan payments). Pre-pandemic average was a bit over $6b/month or about $75b a year. That number isn’t about to jump to $120b.
