Lots more work to be done in reducing unnecessary testing before surgery.

Can wearables identify older adults with poor functional capacity? Are they better than standard questionnaires?
Yes and no.
We used the cohort from the study of muscle mobility and aging to try and answer this question in @BJAJournals

Importantly, the two approaches identify different subsets of patients. Combining objective activity data with questionnaires may help refine preoperative risk identification.
@AnilMakam I give this same advice all the time. Itβs such an important perspective, and more often than not, itβs the first time a student hears it.
I gave a student advice not to take a research gap year because...
self fund gap year (vs paid as fellow)
opportunity cost of 1 year physician wage
& most importantly
research training more generic & less applicable (vs after residency/fellowship when career more focused)
Thanks to the @sciencefocus for highlighting our new study out in @PLOSONE about what is the right walking intensity to improve mobility in prefrail and frail older adults
