Col. John W. Ripley (USMC) was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his legendary actions in Vietnam in 1972.

Under intense enemy fire, he single-handedly rigged and destroyed a key bridge, halting a massive North Vietnamese advance. His son accepted the award on his behalf.
