Please checkout our new preprint! Beta diversity can be driven by both random sampling processes and non-random ecological processes. In our manuscript, we illustrate how to estimate the non-random component of beta-diversity using simulated and empirical data.
Two decades ago, researchers started an experiment that would challenge the prevailing scientific understanding of plant communities.
While modern agriculture treats diversity as inefficient, the Jena Experiment proved the opposite: complexity is the key to resilience.
Our recent paper in @ESAMonographs challenges the textbook story that fear of wolves drives a trophic cascade in northern Yellowstone. Read the monograph for the science and the news story for the 'skirmish'.

The informal poll results are in, & as I feared, most people are running ANOVAs in #R with functions that can give highly misleading (or flat out wrong) results. Follow along to see why using anova() and aov() is usually inadvisable & why you should be using car::Anova() 🧵
Border wall construction in southern Arizona's Pajarito Mts 4 years ago decimated the Mariposa Canyon watershed as well as jaguar & Mexican spotted owl critical habitat. The area remains in ruin today. Work crews continue to try to stabilize the site & the wall from collapse.
@wally_smith1 Super cool work Wally thanks for sharing! I love the rare occasions seeing these guys in the north mills river near Hendersonville, NC. Apparently that river also took some strong impacts but I haven't been back since Helene.
Great new paper on inverse latitudinal diversity gradient in coastal lomas led by newly minted PhD #FiorellaGuillen and in collaboration with @BioGeoKreft ivhttps://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.10.23.619859v1
🎉Calling disease ecologists (especially exp. evolution in microcosms). Assistant professorship at University of South Carolina in microbial ecology.
I'd love to have another disease or microcosm person here!

Beginner or Advanced R User? 🤔
➡️ This cheat sheet is gold.
It summarizes all the best practices R developers should apply.
If some of it isn’t familiar, the first module of my https://t.co/wK6l6vXJe9 project explains exactly this!
Thanks so much @_wurli 🙏
What's missing?
I guess the key issue is that the CI's in that fig 6 are for the means and not for the difference in the means: https://t.co/tElo4JpQQf
When converting from statistical significance to biological significance it should make us pause when CI's overlap - don't you think?
Although this is mathematically correct, it would lead to bad scientific inference using the overlap of confidence intervals. So if you have less data (n=3 vs n=10) your CI's can overlap more to indicate a difference between groups...?
A new study reveals that developing new climbing routes is the biggest threat to cliff plants, cutting species richness by nearly 40% 🧗♀️
As a result, this study proposes a conservation protocol that regulates climbing and preserve pristine cliffs ⛰️

🚨 New paper 🚨 I'm very delighted to share our new paper where we appraise the state-of-the-art in spatial ecoacoustics and propose a new open-source, DIY platform for spatial ecosystem recording (MAARU) https://t.co/2P99VtQcLc
Please reach out to me if you are interested in acting as a data / code peer reviewer for @Ecology_Letters. I have been acting as one for about 1 year now. Let me know if you have questions. #OpenScience
