Love this. The comments really show the country we live in. It’s our responsibility to educate them but extreme behaviours like rioting shows a disconnect between school and home. I’m sure school didn’t teach them to riot but the heavy influence from home is why they did.

Statement from Roksana Hussain, the HT whose proposed letter to a parent we posted earlier here:

“The letter suggested, addressing the parents of children involved in the riots, has indeed sparked considerable interest on Twitter. 

The letter advises parents to consider alternative provisions for their child. It is not intended to exclude any student or absolve the school of its responsibilities. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of upholding the values we teach within the school environment and highlights the role of parents in reinforcing these values at home and in the community.

As a Headteacher, I am committed to protecting and educating children at school and within the community, both in-person and online. Schools can educate a student to the best of their ability; however, there comes a point where parents must be held accountable, as they are legally responsible for their children until the age of 18. It is not solely the responsibility of schools to manage all aspects; parents need to take significant responsibility.

On some of the tweets, it seemed that the expectation was for schools to support children entirely, which we certainly strive to do. I work in an inclusive inner London school where our students are predominantly of African and Eastern European descent. We respect and teach about diverse religions and cultures. However, schools alone cannot address every issue; parental involvement is crucial”

Any school with pupils that participated in the riots have clearly failed the child so they are no longer a good fit for the school- they need to leave. I’ve heard of non-white pupils being excluded for less.
