Not sure how the mainstream press are missing this, can’t find a single report over past month (except Le Monde), as we have hottest global sea surface temperatures EVER recorded. #ClimateCrisis
Alternate history thought experiment: ⚛️
If nuclear power was discovered today, there’d be dancing in the streets, people crying with joy, young generations becoming more optimistic about the future, etc.
It would feel like the breakthrough we’ve all been waiting for. Forget about LK-99 and room-temperature superconductors, this would be much bigger! 👨🔬
We'd feel like all we have to do is build a lot and then we can have lots of clean, cheap power! Solve so many environmental problems! All of it would take very little land. It would make hydrocarbon-fueled dictators around the world less powerful and avoid energy conflicts! We could feel confident about our ability to electrify transportation with EVs and heating with heat pumps.
It's such a weird accident of history that we figured out how to harness safely one of the strongest forces in the universe, but then irrational memes about it (or about nuclear weapons, which are different) made us largely renounce using it.
Our civilization has been fighting with an arm tied behind its back ever since...
The 7 hottest days on Earth in the last 100,000+ years all happened in the last week:
July 6 ~ 17.23°C / 63.01°F
July 7 ~ 17.20°C / 62.96°F
July 4 ~ 17.18°C / 62.93°F
July 5 ~ 17.18°C / 62.92°F
July 8 ~ 17.17°C / 62.90°F
July 10 ~ 17.12°C / 62.81°F
July 9 ~ 17.11°C / 62.79°F
This is straight-up the most interesting climate idea I have ever seen.
Mitigate climate change! Reduce sea level rise! Create new ecosystems, energy sources, & economic opportunities!
There must be some fatal flaw but damn.

Developed countries have already ended waterborne disease. In the next few decades we could do the same with airborne disease. You'd never catch a cold again, and would never have to worry about the flu or pneumonia.
Brilliant piece by @finmoorhouse.

UBI critics: If we give people money without conditions, people will stop working.
UBI pilot: Turns out the UBI group worked more than the control group.
UBI critics: Well of course giving people more money works. But it costs too much.
UBI pilot: Turns out the money spent on UBI reduced other costs greater than the UBI.
UBI critics: Yeah but people will stop working.
new kind of dad just dropped:
✨climate dad✨
this is in addition to the traditional options of 1) great wars dad and 2) grill dad
should this type of dad appeal to you, you can start now by talking exclusively about heat pumps

You know what someone should invent? An audio QR code. Some special tone that would take your phone to a website. Perfect for podcasts, radio, stuff like that.
This is incredible: a "Tube line"-style map showing the delta-v you need to get between any two points in the solar system. Pick two places and add up all the numbers along your route. Somebody tell me what genius made this! https://t.co/cNi8ph9wc4

If you had told me back in 2016 that Trump would sell top secret spy and nuclear intel to foreign adversaries, I’d be like “yeah I know, that’s what we keep saying”
