Dear @WhiteHouse, my name is Rodney Smith Jr., founder of Raising Men & Women Lawn Care Service in Huntsville, Alabama. Through our 50 Yard Challenge, over 6,000 kids across the country have signed up to mow free lawns for the elderly, disabled, veterans, active-duty military, first responders, and single parents. With America celebrating its 250th birthday this year and me also being born on July 4th, I wanted to humbly ask if a few kids from our program and myself could travel to Washington, D.C. to help mow the White House lawn for this historic celebration.

More than anything, I want these kids to see how a simple act of service something as ordinary as mowing a lawn for someone in need can lead to extraordinary places. What better lesson in community service than showing them that helping others can take them all the way to our nation’s capital? I’d also love to bring my American flag-themed mower in hopes that the President might sign it, so I can later auction it off and donate 100% of the proceeds to a nonprofit supporting veterans. It would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to highlight the importance of service, patriotism, and the impact young people can have when they choose to make a difference. 🇺🇸

I want ANSWERS from Atlanta. The number of assaults, robberies, and rapes on MARTA’s trains is MORE THAN THREE TIMES the national average.

- Detailed action strategy to prevent crime and fare evasion

Ogni anno, il 2 giugno, mi fermo.
Non è un obbligo di protocollo: è qualcosa di più personale.
Ho trascorso decenni in uniforme, ho visto cosa significa per un Paese tenere insieme la propria storia e il proprio futuro in una sola ricorrenza.
Quella capacità — rara, non scontata — appartiene all'Italia in modo del tutto particolare.
Il mio ruolo al Comitato Militare della NATO mi impone una neutralità che rispetto e in cui credo: trentadue nazioni alleate, nessuna da privilegiare, nessuna da trascurare. Eppure la neutralità non è cecità.
Dal mio punto di osservazione vedo ogni giorno quello che i singoli Alleati portano all'interno dell'Alleanza, non soltanto in termini di truppe e sistemi d'arma, ma di cultura, di metodo, di presenza.
E posso dire, senza violare alcuna neutralità, che l'Italia è apprezzata.
Profondamente, trasversalmente apprezzata.
Non è soltanto quello che porta, come i contingenti nei Balcani, la presenza nel Mediterraneo, il contributo al fianco est in un momento in cui la guerra è tornata sul suolo europeo con una brutalità che nessuno di noi avrebbe voluto rivedere.
È il modo in cui lo porta.
C'è una capacità italiana di stare nei teatri più difficili con rigore militare e intelligenza umana insieme, che i partner riconoscono e che ho imparato ad apprezzare sul campo, prima ancora di arrivare a questo incarico.
Il 2 giugno 🇮🇹 è anche l'occasione per ricordare perché tutto questo è possibile: perché esiste un patto solido tra le Forze Armate e la Repubblica.
Le istituzioni democratiche — nazionali ed europee, la #NATO come l'Unione Europea 🇪🇺 — danno senso alla missione; le Forze Armate restituiscono a quelle istituzioni la concreta possibilità di esistere e operare in libertà.
È una reciprocità che, quando funziona davvero, è una delle cose più belle che un Paese sappia esprimere.
Questo legame però deve allargarsi.
La sicurezza oggi - e alla NATO lo sappiamo bene - passa dal cosiddetto “whole-of-society” approach: non si costruisce cioe’ soltanto nelle caserme, ma nella quotidianità di una società che conosce i propri rischi, si fida delle proprie istituzioni e sa come rispondere.
L'Italia ha tutto ciò che serve per essere un punto di riferimento in questo.
Lo dico con convinzione, non per cortesia.
Non potendo essere presente oggi, a tutte le donne e gli uomini in uniforme che oggi sfileranno, o che si troveranno lontani in qualche posto del mondo che sulla cartina pochi saprebbero indicare, ma anche a chi, per difendere quei valori che oggi celebriamo, ha sofferto, talvolta sino all’estremo sacrificio: grazie.
Non e’ una formula. È la cosa più vera che mi sento di scrivere in questo giorno.
