This confirms that the soil and rocks are a reddish color, similar to rust.

On the seventh anniversary of the Moon Landing, the Viking 1 lander successfully landed on Mars at 7:53 AM Eastern Time.

The lander transmits the first-ever pictures from the surface of Mars back to NASA.

Viking 1 was meant to land on the Fourth of July, but had to be delayed due to technical issues. Nevertheless, the date is historic.
