I'll be real, Lanterns has burnt me out on super hero stuff. I'm tired of engaging with cynical Hollywood productions that just boil stories down to their tropes and reassemble them into substanceless gunk. I need to start watching real movies again.
@ibuwankenobi There are a LOT of people that think "characters talking a lot" = good writing. They are just as dumb as people who will hate a movie because it doesn't have enough explosions, but a million times more pretentious.
@shin_kale_rider It's a show that wants to be like The Sopranos or Succession, but can't fully commit to the central characters being unlikable and their desire for power being misguided. It just makes the show incoherent when it turns around and says these people are supposed to be heroes.
@shin_kale_rider Same. I thought him giving up the ring in episode 5 made a lot of sense, gave him an actual arc and directly confronted the themes the show was invoking. It exists in the DCU though, so he has to regress and choose the ring, and it's treated as a triumph instead of a tragedy.
@NobleQAli Someone watching a Green Lantern show and wanting to see Green Lantern stuff is not particularly odd. Someone watching a Green Lantern show and wanting it to be absent of Green Lantern stuff is utterly perplexing.
@NobleQAli I may not agree with superhero fans who can't enjoy an adaption if it gets the costume wrong, but that perspective makes infinitely more sense to me than ostensible superhero fans who can't enjoy an adaption if it gets the costume right
@joniniplo Divorce would have actually moved the characters forward at least, but that's really the crux of the issue. Editorial doesn't want him as a divorcee in his 30s, he has to be a bachelor in his 20s. It's not enough for him to no longer be married, he has to never have been married
@Bluechesselucci@clkmotsmlvlle Sure, his "not my jurisdiction" mentality is cold, but John is the last person who is allowed to judge him for that when he actively covered up Hal's murder.
@MarrloEd The "people just want key jangling" sentiment is so bizarre when the show only does key jangling. It will reference Mogo, Carol Ferris has a cameo, they talk about Oa, but none of them have an actual presence in the narrative. It's wholly uninterested in GL outside of references.
@cafe_crow_ His plan to get the ring in order to solve the murder because he believed in justice for Hal at all costs was kind of interesting, but him letting the murderer go free really recontextualizes it as just grave robbing lol
@khaliltooshort I thought the plan to get a hold of the ring was clever in the context of using it to investigate Hal's death, but it ends up just being grave robbing and making himself an accessory to murder. Very weird narrative choice for a character that's supposed to be a hero.
@JakeWally It has the premise of a single episode of Star Trek TOS, but it's an 8 episode series, so they have to cram in a bunch of convolutions to fill time. Also why it's narratively and thematically a mess
@kabrieltwt Like, he's just a grave robber and an accomplice to Hal Jordan's murder, but it's supposed to be a triumphant moment when he stands up to Guy? Very bizarre
@kabrieltwt I'm genuinely wracking my brain thinking of why we are supposed to see John as a hero. I thought him digging up Hal to steal his ring was gonna be for the purpose of getting justice for his murder, but he just helps the murderer cover up the crime?
I get the whole thing about Manhunters in this show being master manipulators who can climb the rungs of society and destroy it from the inside, but because Noah is so young they can only convey his influence by having him be captain of the football team in bum fuck no where
