Any music made with African percussion and vocals before, during, or after Fela's time is an "afrobeat." Therefore, Fela didn't create it; he just gave the existing African sound a catchy, shortened name (afrobeat).

When I post on the “Ethiopian Bible” and its relative later attestation, I get a fair amount of people taking issue due to the presence of the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8. Doesn’t this text prove that early Christianity reached Ethiopia in the first-century AD?

Simple answer? No, or at least probably not based on Acts. The Ethiopian eunuch came from a region quite different from the modern nation of Ethiopia. Ancient “Ethiopia” actually refers to Nubia, the territory stretching from Aswan in southern Egypt down to Khartoum in Sudan. In ancient documents, Ethiopia designated the lands lying south of Egypt, encompassing present-day Sudan and possibly territories just slightly south of it.

The terminology itself reflects this geographical shift. The region was known in Old Testament times as Cush, and during the Roman period it became known as Nubia.

First-century readers would have connected the eunuch specifically with the kingdom of Meroe, whose queens traditionally bore the title “Candace,” the very title given to the eunuch’s sovereign in Acts 8:27.

The significance of this geographical distinction extends beyond mere nomenclature. Homer referred to Ethiopians as people “who are at the world’s end,” and it is reasonable to assume that inhabitants of the lands south of Egypt bore this designation. This positioning at the world’s edge made the eunuch’s conversion theologically meaningful within Luke’s narrative framework. His encounter with Philip represented the gospel reaching the uttermost parts of the earth, as promised in Acts 1:8.

Understanding the eunuch’s actual origin also clarifies his ethnographic identity. The Greek term “Aethiops” (Ethiopian) was the most common generic designation for a broad black ethic group in Greco-Roman usage, and classical literature consistently identifies Ethiopians as simply a reference to a dark-skinned people. The eunuch was thus a black African from ancient Nubia, a detail that carries theological weight for understanding Luke’s emphasis on the gospel transcending ethnic and geographic boundaries.
