I’m thrilled to publish a new commentary in @Nature on a question that continues to generate more controversy than clarity: is social media addictive?
In the piece, I make three main arguments, which I describe below:
3. The APA needs to get involved. In the US, formal clinical recognition depends on the APA and the DSM, so the organization should engage with the current evidence and help determine whether maladaptive social media use qualifies as an addictive disorder.

Did you know that smartphone addiction isn't real? In this new article with Jens Binder, we argue that it's like saying someone with alcohol use disorder has "bottle and glass disorder." The smartphone is just the delivery vehicle, not the actual problematic reward!
