The incredible story of Radek Stepanek at the 2008 ATP Finals 🃏

November 2008 - The year-end Masters Cup is held in Shanghai, China for the final time, with an absolutely stellar line-up:

#1 Rafael Nadal
#2 Roger Federer
#3 Novak Djokovic
#4 Andy Murray
#5 Nikolay Davydenko
#6 Andy Roddick
#7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
#8 Juan Martin del Potro

#9 Gilles Simon is also scheduled to fly to Shanghai as the first (and only) on-site alternate.

Two days prior, the Frenchman finds out he’s in, as Nadal pulls out due to injury - which leaves the ATP looking for a new alternate at the last minute…

The regular season concluded the previous week in Paris-Bercy, so pretty much everyone is either still in Europe, already home, or half a world away for vacation.

#10 James Blake, who fell just short of making the cut for Shanghai in making the Bercy semis, declines to make the trip as an alternate; so does #11 David Nalbandian, who’s gearing up for the Argentina-Spain Davis Cup final; so does #12 David Ferrer for the same reason.

When #27 Radek Stepanek receives the call-up, he’s understandably stunned - how in the world is he in consideration for the ATP Finals…?!

Also, after losing to eventual champion Tsonga in the second round of Bercy, he flew to Thailand for vacation, and he’s currently chilling on a beach with no tennis gear…

But he does the quick math:

Bangkok to Shanghai by flight is only 4 hours…

It comes with a guaranteed $50,000 paycheck, even if he ends up not playing…

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as he’s never qualified for the ATP Finals or even come particularly close…

And so he spontaneously flies to Shanghai, with his rackets and tennis clothing shipping from Europe.

And what was bound to happen happens:

Roddick twists his ankle at practice the day before he’s supposed to face Federer.

Enter world number TWENTY-SEVEN Radek Stepanek. The lowest-ranked player to ever compete in the ATP Finals.

Now, remember those rackets and clothing Stepanek had shipped from Europe? Well, they were withheld by Chinese customs…

No rackets, no clothes, fresh off vacation, with Federer, the double defending champion, hungry for revenge after losing to Simon in his first match…

Fortunately, Djokovic comes through and lends Stepanek a few of his rackets - they don’t have the same sponsor, but who cares at this point?

(Ah, and Murray also lends Stepanek a pair of tennis socks)

Stepanek, playing with Djokovic’s rackets and Murray’s socks, unexpectedly gives Federer a run for his money, takes him to a first set tiebreak…

Then Federer closes the door and wins 7-6(4) 6-4.

Speaking in press, Stepanek reveals the story about Djokovic and Murray helping him out, and says he almost played without his contact lenses, which also got lost.

Two days later, Stepanek loses his last match 6-1 6-4 to Simon; Federer goes on to lose an epic to Murray and gets knocked out in the ATP Finals group stage for the first (and last) time of his career.

Djokovic goes on to win his first ATP Finals title.
