🤔 How did Snell’s Law end up named after Snell & Descartes instead of Ibn Sahl?

Ibn Sahl first described the law of refraction in 984 in Baghdad, using it to derive lens shapes with no geometric aberration.

The law was “rediscovered” by Thomas Harriot in ~1602, but his findings weren’t published.

Willebrord Snellius derived an equivalent form in 1621. Because his (and later others’) work was more accessible to European scholars, his name got attached.

Descartes published the law in his Dioptrique (1637), which gave it further fame. In French contexts it’s often called la loi de Descartes or loi de Snell-Descartes.

Meanwhile, Ibn Sahl’s work remained largely unknown to European scholars for centuries, so the European scientific narrative omitted him.
