The Cali Cartel in Colombia used a computer center coupled with sophisticated intelligence collection and analysis methods to identify and kill at least a dozen informants in 1994.

In May 1994, Colombian authorities raided a condominium complex belonging to Jose Santacruz Londono (pictured here). Inside they discovered an IBM AS/400 midrange computer, valued at more than $1,000,000 at the time. Its processor was ten times faster than previous versions and it could connect to multiple peripheral systems, powering an entire office network. The mainframe was much larger than modern computers, weighing approximately 300lbs.

Agents from the US Drug Enforcement Administration were allowed to transport the mainframe back to the US for decryption and analysis. After a significant effort which included assistance from Guillermo Pallomari-Gonzalez, a senior member of the Cali cartel who’d fled to Miami, the agency was able to access everything stored on the AS/400. Besides the expected evidence of criminal activity which included a list of government officials receiving bribes, the DEA discovered something far more shocking at the time.

The cartel had purchased telephone records for the entire region for the years 1992 through 1994, along with all motor vehicle records for the entire country. A team of analysts sat at workstations connected to the AS/400 on rotating shifts. After identifying phone numbers belonging to the US embassy, DEA, and others, they worked to identify phones in the region that had been in contact with those numbers. Identifying a pattern of calls could point to an informant in the community or even within the cartel itself. According to Colombian officials, approximately twelve informants were identified and killed through these means.

Latin American drug cartels and other criminal organizations have often been at the forefront of implementing both intelligence and counterintelligence strategies due to the high risks and high rewards inherent in their business model.

Yes, essentially.

I visualize it like those demonstrations of gravity that use a rubber sheet and balls of different weights.

Gradient descent creates “gravity wells” according to how strongly each pattern appears in the training data. The deepest well (7) is where the optimizer settles, so the model’s probability mass collapses into it and the shallower ones (like 5) get "dragged into" it.

In fact the shallow elements of the original distribution remain intact but are strongly down-weighted.

Some women trauma dump at church...
Others do it--ironically--on Twitter...

Some want $2 for bus fare...
Others expect you to indulge their self-righteous indictments of humanity, and to then take them seriously...

Some women are soldiers who set aside their own burdens to show up, day in and day out, for decades, to serve the poor...

Others are simply, "something else"...

Each of them is in good company at Church.

German forces used a concealable, body-worn direction finder to locate clandestine radios operating during World War II.

With resistance cells and secret agents deployed throughout occupied Europe, anyone with a shortwave radio could tune in to hear coded message transmissions being sent back and forth across the continent. Both the German Abwehr and Gestapo worked hard to locate these radio operators as soon as they went on the air.

Because of the lack of automobiles on the roads through most of Europe, resistance lookouts could quickly spot a signals intelligence vehicle entering the area, meaning the Germans had to find a way to get direction-finding equipment into a neighborhood or city block without alerting anyone.

This device, called a Gürtelpeiler was developed in 1942, and manufactured by the Kapsch company in Austria. It was designed to fit the natural curve of the body, and the large loop around the neck functioned as an antenna. Previous direction finders had fit inside of a suitcase, but the Gürtelpeiler was the most concealable model yet. The maximum range was 3 kilometers, but it functioned best within one kilometer of the radio. This incredibly forward-thinking, body-worn design was adapted into several other models used throughout the Cold War.

Larger fixed direction finders searched for secret transmissions and directed mobile teams towards the signal, where they would begin sweeping a particular region. Once the operators had narrowed the search to a single city block or row of houses for example, German troops would move in and conduct house-to-house searches to find the radio operators.

The only real defense against a direction finder was limiting transmissions to the shortest times possible. But sending encoded messages via Morse code was time-intensive no matter what. Secret radio operations in occupied Europe was incredibly dangerous work, and operators generally had a one-month lifespan once they deployed.
