Once you get in the best physical shape of your life, you realize that the cure for all your mental struggles were the self-discipline to stick to the training, diet, and lifestyle that you knew you were always supposed to maintain, as well as enough self-respect to build relationships with people who were focused on clear goals, since such people have no time to get offended or create worthless drama.
"Amateurs focus on the company. Professionals focus on the price.
A stock is not cheap or expensive based on its absolute price — it's based on what you're paying relative to earnings, book value, cash flow.
Pay too much and your return is capped, no matter how well the company does.
Pay little and your return is amplified, even if the company muddles along.
That's the ultimate margin of safety." - Peter Lynch
“Overpaying is the only mortal sin in investing because it is the only one that removes optionality. When you pay too much, you are no longer investing in a business; you are making a bet that the future will be exactly as you imagine it. And the future never cooperates. When you pay very little, you are buying the right to be wrong in hundreds of ways and still make money. That is the only asymmetry that survives in the real world.” - Nassim Nicholas Taleb
In last 5 years, 3 years, 1 year preiods, the Nifty PSU bank index has outperformed the Nifty Private Bank index.
Of course, in longer term the Private Bank Index has done well.
But the point to undesrtsand here is that, PSU Banks have done very well in the last 5-7 years. GNPAs from an average of 13% have come down below 3%. And net NPA's are below 1%. Balance sheets of PSU banks are very good.
PSU banks have actually grown higher than private banks last FY.
I track PSU banks closely. And can say that there is lot of change. The focus is improved, the business per employee has been going up. Keen eye on NPAs. Technology is being embraced.
Is there room for improvement? Yes, there is. And I see that happening.
There are many who had a dim view of PSU banks and PSU companies. "They are for government" is what they said. But one can see many PSUs have given fantastic returns in the last few years. Be it Defence, Railways, PSU Banks and so on.
I have always been of the view that rigidity is a big enemy of investors. One needs to be objective. And look for change. When change happens, money is made.
Cheerleaders will talk about taxes, rates, liquidity, political changes, inflation, astrology....impact on stocks....
But will skip the two most important questions on a business:
What is it worth?
How much am I paying?
