I'm glad to share that my article 'The politics of capital mobility in dollarized economies: comparing Ecuador and El Salvador' is #OpenAccess at @RIPEJournal!
Summary in a 🧵(1/6)

In Ecuador, where social movements had a strong mobilizational capacity, post-neoliberal governments deployed encompassing capital controls, while their right-wing successor had to follow a gradualist approach in their liberalizing agenda. (5/6)
In El Salvador, given the weakness of the bottom-up pressure, post-neoliberal administrations pursued a targeted approach, while the neoliberal successor could implement a radical agenda that even included the adoption of #bitcoin as legal tender alongside the US dollar. (6/6)
In both countries, administrations led by post-neoliberal left-wing parties tightened capital flow management, while their right-wing successors gave a new impulse to capital mobility. However, these regulatory cycles varied according to the strength of popular pressures. (4/6)
To illustrate this argument, I compare Ecuador and El Salvador, two Latin American countries that embraced official dollarization as part of their neoliberal adjustments in the late 1990s and early 2000s. (3/6)
Bringing the Polanyian double movement into the analysis of international financial subordination, I argue that party ideology and popular mobilization still contribute to policy variegation in capital flow management even at the bottom of the global currency hierarchy. (2/6)

Last week I presented a paper, learned about new IPE research, and even went on a hike on a sunny (!) Edinburgh (led by our amazing host @JuliaEHCalvert) at the annual @bisa_ipeg workshop. Looking forward to the next IPEG events!
Deeply grateful for the opportunity to speak about some of my reflections at the BISA-IPEG annual book prize lecture. It is in hybrid mode. The link to register is 👇

Strongly recommended for political economists! Besides the pluralistic environment, the postdoc at @LeedsUniBSchool gave me the proper conditions to navigate the difficult transition between a PhD and a permanent position.
Leeds post-doctoral fellowships are out! A great opportunity to develop your research with a LUBS academic and a pluralist economic environment!
