Data in Democracy Summer School. Supporting #ResponsibleData & #ResponsibleTech by bringing social science insights to data science, analytics, and technology.
.@andyguess and colleagues' recent work found that people clicked on fake news they found on Facebook far more than any other social or search platform.
The Data in Democracy Summer School keynote lecture is underway. @andyguess tells us about his important work on the prevalence of "fake news" in Americans' information diets.
Trolling, fake news, digital framing... How to make scientific sense of this? Large datasets, machine learning, and online experiments to the rescue. Andrew Guess (Princeton University) explains how. https://t.co/WkL0KVAXzq
Because of #GDPR, USA Today decided to run a separate version of their website for EU users, which has all the tracking scripts and ads removed. The site seemed very fast, so I did a performance audit. How fast the internet could be without all the junk! 🙄

NEW report by @wphillips49 shows how bad actors hijack mainstream news media; proposes tactics to minimize harm & manipulation when reporting on the internet https://t.co/yoTbk3nziS
A provocative & powerful statement. It makes clear why those of us working in #datascience & #tech need the social sciences & humanities. And it's precisely why we launched the #DatainDemocracy Summer School. If you're designing tech for society, please join us in July. https://t.co/oVdEwShYOX

It seems simple, but the way #GoogleAnalytics measures users isn't as obvious as you may expect. Read on to understand how this metric is calculated. https://t.co/kUM4ZW0Jys
Whatsapp's new #GDPR terms of service are impossible to read on the scroll screen...
So I stitched it all together into one 5000 pixel image.

Reminds me of a research project on the ethical dimensions of augmented reality apps that I started a few years ago but never really got going. Who decides when/what layers of information are provided? How do we control for bias and ensure transparency? https://t.co/9hUufcJ9i6
This story buried the lede: Facebook says it will build an API for political advertising.
When that happens, it will be a big win for transparency. Citizens should be able to see and fact-check all election communications.

This tweet is getting lots of "It's just a demo; settle down," responses. But @zeynep's making a crucial point. We've seen how powerful deceptive uses of tech can be, & if we aren't placing ethics & transparency questions 1st, we're going to make things worse. #ResponsibleTech https://t.co/iH1nHyyvfp
Google Assistant making calls pretending to be human not only without disclosing that it's a bot, but adding "ummm" and "aaah" to deceive the human on the other end with the room cheering it... horrifying. Silicon Valley is ethically lost, rudderless and has not learned a thing.
