🚀 What does it take to diversify a regional economy?

Sometimes, the answer is already in local know-how.

In Aysén, we attended a seminar on EC hosted by @ProChile, where our marketing lead introduced our company, and @cesifoti explained how EC can guide regional development.

Every day, more than $2B+ crosses the US-Mexico border 🇺🇸🇲🇽.

This is not just trade; it is co-production, and it is essential for the competitiveness of North America.

Today we are happy to launch Border Value .com, a platform exploring what it takes to make products in North America.

By combining value-chain estimates and trade data, we show that making products in North America can require dozens of border crossings.

Mexico exports cars to the US but imports processors and engines form its northern neighbor.

American engines, in turn, contain parts that are often made in Mexico, such as starter motors and generators.

These parts, however, are built of metal rods and inputs produced in the US.

Trade between Mexico and the US is like a snowball that adds value each time inputs "roll" across the border.

This added value is essential for the competitiveness of North America vis-a-vis other trade blocs, such as RCEP, which today exports nearly three times as much as the USMCA (formerly NAFTA).

For value chains, the US and Mexico border is not a boundary but a seam.

Do you have what it takes to forecast International trade?

Today, we are launching AI4trade, a global challenge where teams compete for cash prizes by submitting their best trade forecasts.

But it comes with a couple of twists:

1. This is a future out-of-sample challenge, so teams will need to forecast data that will not exist at the time of submission (impossible to train to the test 👹).

2. Forecasts must be better than simply using the latest trade data available at the time of submission (e.g. using July data as a prediction for October numbers ⏰).

This should be a fun global competition. People from all parts of the world are welcome to participate and all methods are allowed.

We hope the challenge stimulates more work at the intersection of AI and economics.

Last week we celebrated the Conference on Economic Complexity (CEC) at Corvinus University of Budapest. The conference gathered an amazing international network of scholars and practitioners who gave excellent presentations exploring the latest developments in the field.

It was interesting to see various emerging topics.

On the empirical side, there was work focused on estimating bilateral trade potential using machine learning, work comparing metrics of relatedness and complexity, and work on the use of multidimensional economic complexity estimates to explain sustainability outcomes and the resilience of economies to financial crises.

On the theoretical side, there was interesting work on economic complexity as a co-clustering method and work deriving the economic complexity index from traditional economic models.

The conference also included a Policy Impact Panel where @datawheel brought together scholars with the practitioners that are using these tools and ideas in practice.

The best of all though was the lovely community that formed during the week. We enjoyed each other's company, challenged each other with questions, and got together for the amazing boat party at the end of the week.

Looking forward to making this an annual event!!
