"The moment you realize you are not present, you are present. Whenever you are able to observe your mind you are no longer trapped in it." - Eckhart Tolle
Johns Hopkins researchers surveyed individuals who have used #psychedelics and asked them to rate their agreement with statements Before and After their experience. The statement topics include:
1. Dualism
2. Paranormal/Spirituality
3. Non-Mammal Consciousness
4. Mammal Consciousness
5. Superstition
Here are some of those statements and their results that really stood out to us:
🍄 The consciousness of myself does not die with my physical body. (Before: 33%. After: 62%)
🍄 It is possible for some people to predict future events. (Before: 30%. After: 50%)
🍄 Non-physical conscious entities (e.g., souls, angels, spirits) exist. (Before: 39%. After: 68%)
🍄 Some aspect of me (e.g., consciousness, soul, some form or awareness) will continue to exist after the death of my physical body. (Before: 38%. After: 74%)
🍄 There is a hidden or deeper purpose to life and all of existence about which many people are unaware. (Before: 49%. After: 85%)
🍄 Your mind, soul or consciousness can leave your body and travel. (Before: 30%. After: 70%)
🍄 Reincarnation does occur. (Before: 23%. After: 49%)
🍄 The universe is conscious. (Before: 33%. After: 80%)
🍄 The consciousness of myself does not die with my physical body. (Before: 33%. After: 62%)
🍄 There are hidden or deeper meanings to everyday events beyond both simple factual explanations and more complicated scientific explanations for understanding the world. (Before: 50%. After: 87%)
🍄 Some (if not all) non-human primates (e.g., chimpanzees) are capable of having conscious experience. (Before: 64%. After: 83%)
🍄 Plants (e.g., trees, flowers) are capable of having conscious experience. (Before: 26%. After: 62%)
These are just a small sample of the statements that respondents were asked to rate their agreement with. They concluded that "a single psychedelic experience increased a range of non-physicalist beliefs as well as beliefs about consciousness, meaning, and purpose. Further, the magnitude of belief change is associated with qualitative features of the experience. Future research is needed to investigate the roles of brain circuitry, context, innate dispositions, and experiential mechanisms underlying such belief changes. Furthermore, whether such belief changes have clear behavioral consequences is an important topic for future study."
