HELLO AGAIN POLITICS
Finally, hope is back.
After more than 15 years, since the 2008 financial crash, politics has been on a total downer.
Little hope, zero inspiration, and barely any strategic vision. Just a foray of reactive short termism.
@andyburnham is right - politics today is just embarrassing. So disconnected from reality, so bothered about in-fighting and point scoring, so bothered about bettering the party’s chance for elections, and not bothered about the long term good of the country.
The whole country.
And it’s not because I’m a northerner that I’m excited. It’s because I’ve missed hope.
The last time I remember feeling hope in politics was when @BarackObama got elected in 2008, on a wave of optimism. And that’s wasn’t even our politics.
I’ve always voted, but since my days in the student movement, I’ve all but withdrawn from the political spectrum, but always with a belief that a fundamental reset is needed.
And there are many good people involved in this reset. Like Andy said, MP’s, Mayors, and pretty much all public servants - they’re good people who are motivated to do good for their country. They’re behind this wind of change and are fighting the good fight. But they’ve just been fighting with a broken system that surrounds them.
High up on this list of people is a somewhat unsung hero of this whole situation - @wesstreeting . He’s the Andy of the South. His values are the same, he’s from the same grassroots background, and champions the same story. His decision to promptly step aside has paved the way for Andy to take this by storm. To creative an unstoppable wave of optimism that will do so much good for this country.
And if anyone was considering standing against him, the speech today will have all but washed that away. Wes has helped to create that momentum, by backing Andy to win Makerfield, and backing him to win the nations hearts.
And you know what? We need as many people like @andyburnham and @wesstreeting as possible.
What would really top off this hope is if Andy brought @DMiliband back. He’s another who I bet lost hope in British politics, and another who can help to drive home this wave of change.
And make no mistake, it will be a hard wave to drive and will need all the energy we can muster. Andy has put hope in every heart and it will take an army to put growth back in every postcode. An army of the whole public, not just politicians and business leaders.
I work for a business who has felt the suffering of the high street. They are a group of great people who have supported and underpinned the high street for nearly 25 years, and they have felt the pain alongside them.
I am excited to see what this wave of change brings for businesses and people everywhere, and how we can inject the heart back into our communities again.
I imagine I’m not the only one rebooting my X account today. My wife, not usually taken by politics, has watched Andy’s whole speech.
She’s in, I’m in, and I imagine nearly everyone is in.
Thank you @andyburnham, and thank you everyone, for stepping up to change the country.
And just like Manchester, this is a change that we can all make happen.
Kudos to this tram driver-turned-fire fighter who put out a fire at Abraham Moss tram stop this evening. Well done that man! Hope he gets some recognition. @MENnewsdesk@BeeNetwork@AndyBurnhamGM
@liamarmo@deanjohnleach@peterkay_co_uk If you’re still looking for someone, I’d be happy to interview. We were sat in block A, right at the front. Brilliant show!
.@IvanLewis_MP , I’m a constituent. Please don’t let Boris Johnson railroad his destructive Brexit though Parliament tonight. Vote against the program motion tonight please.
