This should bother anyone who claims to care about free speech.

The trump administration created a policy targeting foreign researchers who study disinformation,
hate speech,
fact checking,
and content moderation online.

Visa officers were told to comb through applicants’ resumes,
social media,
and public appearances for that kind of work,

and then pursue findings that could make them ineligible for a visa.

This policy also threatens the immigration status of people already living here.

A federal judge just blocked it,

finding that it violates the First Amendment by punishing one side of a public debate.

The administration says it’s fighting censorship.

But threatening someone’s visa or immigration status because you don’t like their research isn’t protecting free speech.

It’s using the power of government to intimidate and stifle it.
