@PeterPaulGuy It is often said that Ireland needs the immigrant influx to work on unfilled jobs. But most of these jobs are not needed anyway. So the basic argument is a self fulfilling prophesy. I say close the gates.

@PeterPaulGuy This has been going on for 25 years, so no surprise. Ireland is too Dublin centric, has insufficient infrastructure and no joined-up thinking on spatial strategy. Ageing of the population apart why is such an influx needed? Does the electorate ever have a say on this topic?

I live in Switzerland; our Ukrainien 'refugee /asylum seekers' (typically under 60 and avoiding military duty back home) evade vehicle registration charges, motorway vignettes, etc, seemingly open ended. This is happening all over Europe, so imagine the cost.
