Around me, there's hammering, sanding, and cutting steel. Two floors down, a volunteer is cooking. One floor lower, engineers are in the engine room. While I sit alone on the bridge writing this, I’m reminded I’m not really alone—and I’m grateful for that.

I asked some of the crew about their most beautiful or memorable experiences on the John Paul DeJoria. Two themes stood out: life together and learning from each other.

David, Chef-Engineer:
What fascinates me is the amazing people from all over the world. I'm learning so much about different cultures. Life onboard creates deep bonds. I love how we stay in touch, even after someone leaves. I'm especially inspired by the young volunteers—it gives me hope.

Larry, Bosun & Ship Manager:
Every day is different. We see progress through finished projects, mentoring volunteers, and building a team out of strangers who become lifelong friends. The best part? When we’re on campaign and everything clicks. That’s when all the hard work pays off.

Thato, Bridge:
Everyone is here because they want to be. No egos—just passion for a shared mission. It’s peaceful, even though the work is tough. We connect beyond work—there’s mutual respect and lots of laughter. I also got to try something new: working in the galley. It gave me a deep respect for cooks!

Svenja, Deckhand:
It’s hard to choose one highlight. I love how much I’ve grown. On day one, I didn’t know how to use an angle grinder—now I do my own projects. Anyone here can achieve anything. Background doesn’t matter; motivation does. It’s exciting to learn how a ship works. No day feels the same.

Life aboard the John Paul DeJoria isn’t just a job—it’s a passion, a purpose, and an unforgettable experience. With the ship nearly ready to sail to Ireland, we’re more united than ever.
