It's disheartening to see the strides made by Afghan women in the pre-Mujahideen era dismissed as merely 'Kabuli elite' culture. Evidence abounds of women from our most conservative provinces like Kandahar and Helmand, expressing themselves freely and working in diverse sectors. The notion is as absurd as devaluing the women's liberation movement in the US as a 'New York elite' phenomenon. Such propaganda only serves to bolster the narrative of the Pakistani-backed Taliban.
