@DrAdamChapman Ah no. Autumn/winter, certainly in the north of Dorset. Lived in Gillingham before Frome, and went there, Mere, Shaftesbury, Frome, Warminster, once with excitement and trepidation to Bridgwater. Dark Saturday nights out!
When Wu Lien-teh left Penang in 1897 to study medicine at Cambridge, the women in his family painstakingly embroidered him a version of his college’s crest in Perakanan beadwork. Heartbreaking and familiar in its mix of love and pride and worry.
Stunning and devastating opening from Newsnight tonight.
Harsh, yes. Media students (and current broadcast journalists!) take note: your edit is nothing without the right choice of music. And oh boy this is quite the choice.
@cew_wood The anger and despair shines through the Gentle Author's posting this morning. I pass the old Foundry most days, and watch it slip ever-further into decay and decline. What a waste. Re-Form and partners would have made a great solution for it.
@OliverJWCox@V_and_A Enjoy your new post. I am sure you will be super-successful. First day, though: at the BM I got hopelessly lost coming back from lunch. I hope you did better.

@MFitzoliver@MartinTideswell @KBJWhitstable @AbiBrown1@SoTCityCouncil@HeritageFundUK@Middleport_Pot@PaulWilliams207 @fredhughesSoT @cew_wood @burleighpottery Happy coincidence. The oral history work coalesced around 1950, so that was where we situated the interpretation. And the Potteries were on a cusp, just before the Clean Air Act and industrial change, while large scale demolition was beginning. I am pleased so many respond to it.
