There are Chinese influence operations that support both sides of U.S. politics, because China is not a monolith, and different actors in the Chinese system have different interests. In the 2020 election, Chinese influence operations heavily favored Trump.

And while it’s impossible to measure whether any of it moved the needle either way, there is lots of evidence that it happened. I covered a lot of this in my 2021 book Chaos Under Heaven.

Just think about Bannon and his longtime funder Guo Wengui, a Chinese billionaire with close ties to China’s Ministry of State Security. Guo spent years building relationships with top Republicans and Democrats before Trump won in 2016, after which he joined Mar-a-Lago and started funding Bannon’s media projects.

Guo interfered heavily in 2020, on Trump’s behalf. He claimed to be a anti-CCP dissident but in truth, he hunted anti-CCP dissidents on behalf of the Chinese security services. His media network spread tons of Hunter Biden laptop lies and other anti-Biden disinformation and lies. He was later convicted of fraud and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Is he an instance of Chinese interference in the 2020 election? 100 percent. For Trump. Will Trump mention that in his speech tonight? I doubt it.

When we use the China threat as a tool for partisan purposes, that’s an abuse of the issue which undermines the real effort to fight this real threat. China tries to interfere in U.S. politics - on both sides.

1/ the ABC and SBS are both number 1 and 2 most trusted sources of information and news in Australia - by a very large stretch. The pro-Israel lobby want to focus their attention on infiltrating the purest news sources

2/ both ABC and SBS also part of the culture wars totems - universities, lefties, the arts, ABC, SBS - all the things the usual conservative supporters of Israel like to attack (and you'll also notice the organisations the Israel lobby and Jillian Segal like to regularly attack too. No coincidence)

Putting the ABC and SBS under the microscope plays into the culture wars warriors who can continue to rail against the fact that the ABC and SBS are full of "lefties and bias"!!!

I'm going to predict that when the damage assessment is complete, well into the future, Trump's greatest crime will prove to be espionage - AND - it will be the most catastrophic breach of national security in American history.
We will discover he passed secrets to Russia from day 1 because he was compromised; and did favors for the Saudis shortly after, purely for personal profit; and who knows what the hell else.
His many Useful Idiocies will boggle the mind. And his America First gaslight will be remembered as it should be remembered: "Trump Before America, facilitated by idiots who called themselves patriots."
His treachery - most done purely for power and profit, and some from pathology, revenge, and entitlement, will have massively impacted the globe, permanently shifted wealth, and cost many millions of lives.
I have to add that a good deal of it would not have happened but for our legacy media's consistent and widespread normalization of his disorders.

A 30-year-old engineer at IBM invented the technology that makes every modern computer chip fast, and one year later IBM fired her, erased her name from the project, and told her she would never work in computing again.

Her name was Lynn Conway.

In 1965, IBM had put her on a secret supercomputer project called ACS. She solved a problem the rest of the team had been stuck on for months: how to make a processor do more than one thing at a time without breaking. The technique she invented is called dynamic instruction scheduling. Every phone, laptop, and server on Earth still runs on a version of it.

In 1968, she told IBM she was transitioning.

They fired her the same year.

Not for her work. The work was brilliant. They fired her because the CEO decided her existence was a liability, and the ACS project quietly buried her contributions in internal memos so nobody outside the company would ever know she had been there.

She was 30 years old, with no degree in her new name, no references, and no way to prove she had ever written a line of code that mattered.

So she started over.

She took a job as a contract programmer at a small firm, worked her way back up, and within a few years landed at Xerox PARC, the lab that was quietly inventing the future of computing.

At PARC, she did it again.

She and Carver Mead wrote a textbook called Introduction to VLSI Systems. It taught engineers a completely new way to design chips, breaking a process that used to take teams of specialists years into something a single graduate student could do in a semester.

Universities picked it up almost overnight. Within five years, it was the standard textbook at every serious engineering school on the planet. The chip industry calls what happened next the Mead-Conway revolution. Without it, there is no modern semiconductor industry. No consumer GPUs. No smartphones. No AI training runs.

She built the pipeline that let students actually fabricate the chips they designed too. It was called MOSIS. It became the model every university chip lab still uses.

And through all of it, almost nobody knew who she was.

She lived quietly for 30 years, never mentioning the IBM years, never explaining the gap in her resume, watching men accept awards for work built on the foundation she had laid twice.

In 1999, she finally came out publicly.

The response inside the industry was silence, then slowly, recognition. She started giving talks. She started writing. She started documenting everything IBM had tried to erase.

In 2020, 52 years after they fired her, IBM formally apologized.

She was 82 years old.

The chip inside the phone you are reading this on has her fingerprints on it twice. Once from 1965, in the way it schedules instructions. Once from 1978, in the way it was designed and manufactured.

They told her she would never work in computing again.

She built half of it anyway.
