Excited for today’s WC final!!
While yesterday’s game was entertaining, the 3rd place game is a bit of a farce akin to the NBA All Star game.
Real soccer/futbol happens today. Spain’s possession game makes it hard for opponents to score, but what it takes it to the next level is possessing without allowing counterattacks. The best thing to happen to actually make the play more exciting would be for Argentina to score first forcing Spain to score. It will likely be a lot more difficult for Argentina to have to come from behind again, but I don’t believe Spain would pack in the defense like England did.
I would love to see Messi magic time!

Great post. You would think the vaunted U.S. higher education system would teach students about the trials you just detailed. We live in a world today where “narratives” with little truth behind them have more power than facts and a system designed to enhance the net worth of the politicians who are elected to help the populace but instead protect and defend greedy self dealing and corruption.

You’re doing great work Nick, but unfortunately the politicians are profiting from the corruption so there’s not much motivation to stop. Corruption and fraud like NGOs, PPP and other government programs have been one of the driving forces of the asset boom and lack of recession we’ve seen since the GFC.

The continual unrelenting focus on margins in the age of FINANCIALIZATION has made a once mean reverting measure at least for the moment non-reverting. Buybacks, passive index chase, workplace reductions, high end consumer buying power (because of a long bullish asset cycle) as well as consumer borrowing availability and so-called “financial innovation” like Buy Now Pay Later have extended the cycle with yet to be resolved unintended consequences.

Only 8 countries in the history of the Cup have ever won and most of them have decades of soccer legacy, so winning it all or even advancing to semis is tough. Changes are necessary and not reaching the quarters goes down as very disappointing. That being said, it is impossible to effect significant change in a system in less than 2 years. I believe Poch did some good things and seemed to have appreciated our country, and if he is committed to the next cycle and given some to authority to exercise needed change, I would give him the opportunity.

I agree with everything you say. But on top of the greatness of Messi, the level of respect and love that his teammates have for him is unlike anything I’ve seen in any sport and is what has transformed and propelled Argentina to the level of success they’ve had in the last two World Cups and Copa Americas. We should all appreciate and enjoy the magic while it lasts because we may not see anything like it again for quite sometime or maybe ever.

Something very unique and incredibly interesting and exciting to watch has happened to this Argentina team.
Yes, they have the greatest player ever. Yes, he makes everyone around him better with his incomparable vision and skill.
However, the respect and love that his teammates have for him is unparalleled in any sport or team I’ve ever seen. They are willing to run through walls for him and combined with his once in a lifetime talent, this is what has made Argentina the team they have become over the last two World Cups and. Copa Americas.
