This #InternationalAntiCorruptionDay, we’re proud to highlight a powerful success story from 2024 that underscores the critical role of civil society in combatting corruption and protecting our planet’s biodiversity.
On 31 May 2024, a Senior Customs Officer in Malaysia was arrested for being involved in an international #pangolintrafficking syndicate, marking a significant victory in the fight against #wildlifecrime and corruption. This milestone was achieved through the joint efforts of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Wildlife Justice Commission, in collaboration with global partners.
This operation built on a 2023 breakthrough, where authorities seized 1.8 tonnes of pangolin scales and luxury assets worth $5 million, exposing a network that bribed officials to smuggle wildlife contraband. Thanks to tools under the UN Convention against Corruption (@uncaccoalition ), such as financial investigations and asset seizure, authorities dismantled a network involved in bribery, wildlife smuggling, and money laundering.
This success story is a testament to the power of cross-sectoral collaboration and the critical role civil society plays in driving transparency and accountability.🌱
Join us and the UNCAC Coalition in calling for greater civil society inclusion in the global anti-corruption fight.
Together, we can make a difference for wildlife!
