Proud to sign a historic global treaty to protect the world’s ocean.
We now have a framework to establish marine protected areas on high seas – which cover 60% of Earth’s ocean – and meet our target of protecting 30% of the world’s ocean by 2030.
68 States have signed the #BBNJ Agreement so far, taking the first steps towards the Agreement’s entry into force, crucial for addressing the triple planetary crisis, and for achieving ocean-related #GlobalGoals and ocean-related goals and targets of #KMGBF.
Our ocean is under threat.
But the High Seas Treaty on protecting biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction gives the ocean a fighting chance.
This historic achievement is an example of global threats being met by global action.

A vote on proposal 37 to list all requiem sharks on CITES Appendix II has just been passed by a 2/3 majority in Committee I of #CITESCoP19. If accepted by the plenary session on Thursday or Friday next week it will come into force with a delay of 12 months
Funky smells, brutal sounds and a soup of issues... many thanks to @AnnaTurns for covering the work of the CSIP in this @guardian article about a harbour porpoise examination earlier this year. https://t.co/MIPa3xaFqd
It's fantastic to see the #UK showing super strong leadership at #IWC68, speaking up for whales and dolphins and calling out countries that continue to slaughter them 🇬🇧💪🐳🐬
We need more of them to reverse the #climate and #biodiversity crises, not less!

Forty years ago, the International Whaling Commission agreed a global ban on commercial whaling.
Today, Link and Defra returned to the Brighton seafront to jointly host a celebration of the historic decision.
Thank you to all who joined us!

Several #CSIoftheSea examinations conducted this week with my CSIP colleague @Perkins16Matt as part of the @CleanCatchUK#HaulingUpSolutions2 workshop in Plymouth. Great to see good friends again and work with everyone to try to reduce UK #bycatch in vulnerable marine species
The #HaulingUpSolutions2 workshop has just kicked off at @NMAPlymouth. Over 60 participants from across the #fishing industry, policy, science & NGOs have joined us for the first day of talks, workshops & exhibitions, exploring alternative fishing gear to reduce wildlife bycatch.
