Joint Practice RECAP:

Bears defense won the day. Pretty dominant throughout. The secondary was so impressive even without Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon. They battled. Tyrique Stevenson isn't afraid to stick his head in there. Nashon Wright was very sticky. Terrell Smith has some physical plays as well. And it seems like every time Dennis Allen dials up the secondary blitzes, good things happen.

The LBs had a strong showing as well. Tremaine Edmunds finished the day with an interception jumping a passing lane over the middle. They continue to show Edmunds and TJ Edwards lined up over the defensive lineman in dime packages with mostly Edmunds dropping back into coverage. But not always. Rueben Hyppolite didn't get many reps, feels like he's got a long way to go.

The defensive line created pressures at times. Montez Sweat had a sack off a stunt, Dom Rob flashed a few times as well. Grady Jarrett was immediately in the backfield on a TFL. Although it felt like they were getting gashed in the run game. Especially to the left outside edge. Gervon Dexter seems to be ready to take another step this season. His backside pursuit was noticeable on a few runs.

Overall, I'd say the Bears defense set the tone and went the whole day bringing the physicality. Dennis Allen has an aggressive defense that seems to bring out the best in his guys. Specifically, Jaquan Brisker, who's had a really good camp. He came away with an interception early and always seems to be around the football.

Full disclosure: I was nearest to the field where the Bears 1st team defense was. The further field from me was where the 1st team offense was. So I was more keyed into the defensive reps than offense. But I tried my best to take everything in. Joint Practices can be tricky for coverage in that regard and I'm sure there is more detailed reporting for those that were closer to that field.

But from what I saw, the offense looked disjointed. More presnap penalties. They didn't look on the same page in the 2 minute drill, the final red zone 11 on 11s resulted in no scores. Mostly having to take a sack or throw the ball away. The first pass Caleb Williams threw in 11 on 11s was an interception. Just messy.

But not without some bright spots. 2 guys names that come up every day at practice on offense and again showed up today were Olamide Zaccheaus and Colston Loveland. They consistently find ways to get open and make plays. Zaccheaus is a technician running routes and has good YAC ability as he at one point shook a guy for a touchdown. I continue to comp him to Earl Bennett in terms of not a big name but a guy you can depend on. Colston Loveland is like your Hybrid 3 wood you pull out of your golf bag at any given moment. He can do it all. He's a mismatch for LBs and corners. At one point he caught a pass and streaked down the field for a touchdown.

Ultimately, Bears fans will have to be patient with the offense. It's going to take time. It took Jared Goff and the Lions years before they really started cooking and that was with Jared already being in the league 6 years and playing under Sean McVay. Caleb is in year 2 and played under Shane Waldron. Big difference.

I'd say both defenses won the day but I'd say the Bears defense was more impressive. But that's because I'm biased and I don't really care. But seriously, I'd say the Bears defense won today more so because what they were doing right vs what the Dolphins were doing wrong. (Although, the Dolphins did have a TON of false starts) Whereas it seems the Dolphins defense won not because of everything they were doing right but more so what the Bears were doing wrong.

Today was an early litmus test. That's it. Now the Bears know more about what they need to work on. Which is a lot. It's okay to have expectations this year but also try to remind yourself to have patience.
