Intranasal oxytocin boosted partner-related reward signaling, but not in hormonal-contraceptive users

In this study, pair-bonded women were given 24 IU intranasal oxytocin and shown pictures of their romantic partner.

In naturally cycling women, oxytocin increased the partner’s attractiveness bias and increased reward-system activity to his face, mainly in the nucleus accumbens and VTA.

In women using hormonal contraception, this partner-specific effect was absent.

Oxytocin reinforced partner value through the reward system only when the natural hormonal environment was intact.

Men prefer more feminine women when testosterone is high

The more testosterone men have at a given moment, the stronger their attraction to feminine facial features in women, British psychologists reported.

The researchers tested 29 heterosexual men twice, two weeks apart. Each time, they rated pairs of faces: the same woman shown in a more masculine or more feminine version. Testosterone was measured from saliva in both sessions.

In the high-testosterone session, men showed a stronger preference for the feminine version of women’s faces.

This effect was only seen when judging women’s faces. It did not appear when judging men’s faces.

Men preferred feminine women in both sessions, but this preference was stronger when testosterone was high.
