Trump Just Turned 9/11 Ground Zero Into Another Obscene Lie About Himself — Again
At a ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the attacks, Trump slipped so far into insanity that calls for the 25th Amendment immediately followed.
On a day meant to honor the dead, Trump stood next to steel from the towers and made the story about himself. Two firefighters, he said, grabbed him, lifted him, and ran with him because the old U.S. Steel Building was creaking and they thought it was coming down. Then, he claimed, two "big, strong" firefighters grabbed him under the arms, lifted him off his feet, and started running with him. He said this was no small feat because he is "not the smallest guy in the world." According to Trump, he told them he could run himself. They were "amazing."
It is a vivid scene. It is also a story that keeps getting bigger the further it gets from 2001 — and it still has no named firefighters, no matching records, and no witnesses who remember it that way.
He was in Midtown that morning, miles from Ground Zero, watching from Trump Tower. That same day he noted that 40 Wall Street — his building — was now the tallest downtown with the towers gone. He did go downtown later. There is video from September 13 of him several blocks from Ground Zero. He told reporters he had workers there. Over the years that became hundreds of men, days of recovery work, and now a physical rescue by two unnamed FDNY giants. Officials who ran the site for months said they never saw him or a Trump crew working under the command that controlled the pile. Fact-checkers have never documented the large crew. Asked for proof of the firefighter story, the White House recycled an old campaign clip.
Rick Reilly said Trump once showed him a telescope in Trump Tower and claimed he watched the towers fall through it. Solid gold, Trump added. Not a word about being carried out of Ground Zero.
That is the obscenity. Not that a private citizen visited Lower Manhattan after the attacks. The obscenity is using 9/11 as a stage: I was there. I was in danger. They had to carry me. Nearly 3,000 people were murdered. Real firefighters ran into the buildings. Trump skipped the New York ceremony because organizers would not let him give a political speech, so he decided to fabricate this fairytale instead.
If two firefighters lifted him, name them. If his crew worked the pile, produce the record. Until then, this is not remembrance. It is a lie told on sacred ground because a mentally ill pathological liar cannot stand next to other people's sacrifice without inventing a starring role for himself.
