The Gulf has everything solar needs to thrive:
☀️Lots of VERY sunny desert
☀️Renewables companies with cheap capital + big expansion plans, backed by national policies
☀️Fast-growing electricity demand
☀️Tariff-free imports of solar panels + batteries

NEW: IT'S NOT JUST THE UK!
🟢The UK is 14th OECD country to become coal-free.
🟢OECD coal power falls to less than HALF of its peak in 2007.
🟢All but 5 OECD countries have seen falls of at least 30% from peak coal power
(lovely dataviz from @C_BruceLockhart) 🧵
UK was birthplace of the industrial revolution, 1st major nation to use coal power over 140 years ago. It is now the first major nation to quit it
This is the culmination of civil society pushing and action going back to 2006. Well done to all involved

At the end of this month, coal power generation in England ENDS after 142 years. This is effectively the conclusion of the Industrial Revolution 🇬🇧 My dear friend @RobBurnett92 and I will treat X to an informative thread on the evolution from Holborn Viaduct to last one standing
Today @ETC_energy published our briefing note on #BuildingGrids Faster: the Backbone of the Energy Transition.
Power grids are a critical enabler of global decarbonisation, linking electricity generation to its uses. Under net-zero scenarios, the total length of grids must grow by over 50% by 2050 – a $22.5 trillion investment.
To fast-track grid build and deliver the transition at the pace and scale required, policymakers and industry must implement a strategic vision for grids and address key bottlenecks.

Good morning with good news: Poland's Coal generation fell from 90% in August 2015 to 52.7% in August 2024!
Wind & solar jumped from 5% in August 2015 to 28% in August 2024.
Solar was 2.5% of Poland's electricity in August 2020 and 18% in August 2024.
Rapid decarbonization!
Good news: After getting off to a late start in the energy transition, Poland is making up for lost time.
Over the first 7 months of 2024, renewables comprised 30.2% of electricity - nearly double the levels seen just three years ago.

Less than a decade ago, new coal plants were springing up everywhere in Asia and beyond..
..it was impossible to think how Turkey, Vietnam Indonesia, Phillipines, Bangladesh, Pakistan, S Africa +more would stop building. But they did.👏
It's just down to 2 countries now🇨🇳🇮🇳
NEW REPORT by @RAEngNews out today, on what delivering on the 2030 clean power mission will mean in practice.
https://t.co/2QqIuPadpo
The work was co-chaired by Sir (now Lord) Patrick Vallance and Dr Simon Harrison and delivered by a small team.
🧵on its key findings
It's difficult to overstate just how quickly battery storage capacity is growing in the U.S.
We've added 384% more storage capacity this year than we did through the first 5 months of 2023.
🧵
Electricity grid congestion isn't just an issue we're grappling with here in the UK - volumes of power involved in remedial actions to manage congestion rose 14% (to 57TWh) in the EU last year.
New capacity and flexibility is the answer. https://t.co/oCPNrqew7I
📢 I'm recruiting! For up to 2 Senior Economic Advisers / Senior Analysts in my HM Treasury Climate Analytical Unit. Closing date 7th July:

Please help by retweeting and sharing widely. Thanks!
#RenewableEnergy developers face mounting waiting times for grid connections.
Will planning reforms and increased finance be enough to clear bottlenecks, or do we need new technologies?

Bold take from @TheEconomist in last issue:
“Solar cells will in all likelihood be the single biggest source of electrical power on the planet by the mid 2030s.”
Wind power is pushing out coal in the UK, as its last remaining coal plant is set to close in October 🌪️
In 2023, UK coal generation was about 30x lower than in 2013 - now making up just 1.4% of the UK’s electricity mix.
