The coldness of a risk algorithm that weighs risk to oneself more than to others gradually dulls the pain of having to keep people out. It is their choice, and coldness begets coldness. Unfortunately.
In particular cases an individual’s vaccine risk “algorithm” should weigh more heavily the risks the unvaccinated pose to the unintentionally susceptible, like my wife, for whom the vaccine did not work. Our home is off-limits even to some people who are close to us.
When plain folk do history it captures plain folk perspectives, which has a kind of value that highfalutin folk could do with more of sometimes, even if it don’t always measure up in other ways.
In my Presbyterianism in WV, I explore this contradiction in terms of those who attached themselves to the Southern Church even though they clearly disfavored slavery:
I don’t care for “Best Virginia.” It plays on the notion that West Virginia’s identity relates to Virginia, as in “the Virginia that is to the west.” WVians have no consciousness, awareness, or identity relating to VA that it does not also have of its other border states.
@SongsForHorses Interesting. Not familiar with this trend or what it means. As a lifelong, eighth-gen WVian, Appalachian identity has been held fairly dear by me and mine. Could this be an outskirts trend? The edges have shrunk leaving a center for which post-appalachia is not a needful thing?
@IVMiles I have literally been run off the road by a mother angry with her sassy daughter barreling head on at me in my lane. She laid on the horn at me as I swerved off the road into the grass while continuing straight ahead in my lane without flinching.
