Detective Helen Grus of the Ottawa Police uncovered an unusual cluster of infant deaths and began asking questions that drew the attention of powerful interests.

For doing her job, she became the subject of Canada's longest and most costly police disciplinary hearing.

Her case has resulted in police officers being required to seek permission before investigating public officials or crimes with "political ramifications." Police are no longer free to simply follow the evidence and uphold their sworn duty to enforce the law.
