Breaking international news stories would deliver live, updated satellite reporting by veteran reporters who disdained punditry.

If I were trying to hold onto new claims of conquest, I would simply not have my regular forces antagonize my mercenaries to the point where it plausibly spills over into a shooting war between various regulars and mercenaries needed to hold the line against a counter-offensive.
