@WillyCuz Peter Cooley, a 19yr old sailor on the Samuel B RobertsDE-413 also visited one of his shipmates parents after surviving the battle of Leyte Gulf. From letters he wrote I know that it was extremely painful. These young men were asked to do things no one should have ever had to do.
@BuzzPatterson DEI is discrimination against a unfavored class, period.
A enlightened civilized society should work toward a goal of NO discrimination.
When I was a young pup Boeing 727 flight engineer (sits just behind the 2 pilots up front), female copilot turns the wrong way (right) to intercept final approach. Captain says nicely “it will work better if you turn left”. She retorts: “ I can do it myself “. Captain looks back at me with a big grin, we’ve been laughing for 40 years !
@VictorVescovo Thank you for your continued interest in the Battle of Samar. My father (Peter Cooley, 19 yrs old) was a sonar man on the Roberts. He had a very difficult time with his memories, he talked very little about his experiences. He would be very pleased.
@RealJamesWoods@annmcelhinney Thank you for describing so many men from this generation. My Father struggled all his life from memories of WWII, he was quiet also. How fortunate we are to have shared time with these great men. I miss him dearly.
@Unsavory_Charac@JulesForCookies@VictorVescovo My father said they could see the shells coming at them, they were so large. They went completely through the Robert’s as it didn’t have any armor as larger battle ships had. Read Hornfishers book The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors.
@VictorVescovo My father was a sonar mate on the bridge during the battle. He said they were thrown around like rag dolls when the ship took fire. The rescue for him took 2 days and nights in the water. He said the rescuers couldn’t tell if they were friendly, as they were covered in oil.
