Personally I have never felt more inspired to keep up than in the company of smarter people
Something that is little discussed in public, is that in water treatment it is open secret that one of the biggest issues right now in big cities is to be able to filter two things from public water:
- Female contraceptives
- Cocaine
Horrible, horrible idea. Processing rare earths is an extremely ecologically damaging activity and I'd rather leave that to China or do it in Kismayu.
Rare earths are not rare at all. Cerium for instance is more abundant than copper. What makes them "rare" is the extreme difficulty in separating them from their compounds which is a horrifyingly toxic activity. Hence Chinese dominance in this area.
Every country on Earth has them. They just don't want to damage their own land. We are not "blessed" to have something America has a gazillion times over. We are just cursed with stupid, low-information, greedy leadership. Leave them in the earth is my vote. If we must incur the ecological costs, it should be future generations a century from now producing their own semiconductors.
