Tom's interview after T1's 3-1 loss to G2 at MSI
Q. What do you think was the main reason for today's loss?
Tom: Overall, there were a lot of moments where we weren't on the same page. In particular, in the final game, we pushed things a bit too hard at times and ended up letting the game slip away. Overall, I think our communication wasn't very good.
Q. There were many moments where G2 used counterpicks in top lane to break open the matchup starting from the laning phase.
Tom: It's true that G2 really likes having counterpick. 'BB' often gets moved to fifth pick and gets a favorable pick. When we were on first pick, our plan was to secure something strong with the first pick and construct drafts where top could at least play a 40-60 matchup.
Q. There were also games where the balance in top lane collapsed beyond the 40-60 matchup you expected.
Tom: In Game 1, with Renekton, Doran managed to recover by himself. In the Yorick-Cho'Gath matchup, there was an incident while checking the Void Grubs, and I think the lane rapidly fell apart from there. As for the Gnar-Yasuo game in Game 3, I don't think it played out the way we had envisioned.
Q. I'm also curious about your thoughts on the joker picks that 'BB' brought out. There were moments where it looked like the team struggled to respond, both in lane and during the macro stages of the game.
Tom: We somewhat expected Yasuo because it's a pick that 'BB' often plays into Gnar. The one we were a little less conscious of was probably Kled.
Q. Of the games you lost, Games 1, 2, and 4, which one do you regret the most?
Tom: Game 4 was the most disappointing. There were moments where we could have solidified our lead but let them slip away. And even when we got back into a position where the game was playable, I strongly felt like our momentum had been suppressed. I think not being able to push forward in the moments when we needed to ultimately led to the loss.
Q. On the other hand, it was also a series where you could see 'Peyz's potential.
Tom: 'Peyz' is just very good at pretty much everything, regardless of what he plays. So in Games 1 and 2, we focused more on non-traditional ADC picks, while in Games 3 and 4, we went with standard marksmen. He's a talented, smart, and very skilled player.
Q. You've played a lot of matches in a short period of time, starting from the Play-In Stage and working your way up. Do you think that affected your performance?
Tom: Even when we were preparing for the Play-In Stage, the matches were packed closely together, so we didn't have much time to spare. Once we reached the bracket stage, if we had beaten BLG, we could have taken a more comfortable path schedule-wise. But that didn't happen, so the loss to BLG really hurts.
Q. EWC 2026 is scheduled for next week. It seems urgent to help the players recover mentally and restore the team's performance.
Tom: Once we get back, I think we'll need to review our drafts and match footage and improve and fix a lot of things. We'll focus on those areas and prepare well for EWC.
Q. Lastly, is there anything you'd like to say?
Tom: I didn't expect us to be eliminated this early, at least by our standards. I feel nothing but sorry. We'll prepare well and do our best to show a better performance at EWC.
