The Free Speech Union was founded six years ago, and in that time we have fought more than 6,000 cases defending people’s right to free speech.

We have also reached a significant milestone, with more than 45,000 members.

The threat to our fundamental right to free speech has never been more acute. Sir Keir Starmer’s Government has pursued policies that are hostile to free speech and our basic liberties, and we believe things could become even worse under our next Prime Minister, Andy Burnham.

The Free Speech Union’s General Secretary, Lord Young of Acton, told The Telegraph: “Well, Starmer comes off as an authoritarian. He’s got that lanyard-wearing, finger-wagging vibe. Whereas Burnham doesn’t. And that may be bad news because it may mean he’s able to put more of a human face on all these fetters on our free speech. ‘Oh, we’re just doing it to protect the weak and the vulnerable…’ That sort of thing. So my worry is that he may be able to make a better case for muzzling us all.”

The Free Speech Union’s team has grown to 28 members who work every day to defend our fundamental right to free speech. While we have supported some high-profile cases, such as Graham Linehan’s, most of our work never makes the headlines.

The single largest category of cases the Free Speech Union handles involves people who have been cancelled for their lawful gender-critical beliefs. This is despite the fact that these beliefs are protected under the Equality Act 2010 and were reaffirmed by last year’s landmark Supreme Court ruling.

Speaking to Celia Walden, Lord Young reflects on his own experience of being cancelled. He tells Celia that he now understands cancel culture as a “new religion”.

He says: “But unlike Christianity, this religion doesn’t have any room for forgiveness. It doesn’t distinguish between the sin and the sinner.”

It was truly awful to see that not a single bishop turned up for the remembrance of Ann Widdecombe in the House of Lords this week.
A woman of deep, unwavering Roman Catholic faith, Ann centred her entire life and political career on her Christian beliefs, from her principled stands on life issues to her tireless advocacy for persecuted Christians. Her devotion to both Church and country was total and courageous.
Even if they disagreed with some of her views, the least the Lords Spiritual could have done was show basic respect for her lifelong dedication. Instead, their absence speaks volumes: too lost in woke values, lacking the courage to honour a woman of real conviction. A sad reflection on where parts of the establishment Church have drifted.
Rest in peace, Ann, you were a true servant of faith and principle. 🙏

What’s most extraordinary about the whole interview for me is, issue after issue, how totally ignorant Campbell is. He is not even aware of the College of Policing and NPCC document warning officers that being “colour blind” was not enough - that document was all over media commentary for about a fortnight after Henry Nowak’s murder. Alastair thinks it’s fake news or something obscure that Konstantin has “found” to catch him out.

This man is the co-presenter of the biggest politics podcast in the country and he really doesn’t have a clue. It’s all just unoriginal vibes-based slop and “here’s something I wrote in my diary” back when I was important. A bit concerning really given the number of people who rely on the podcast to stay informed about contemporary issues
